Have you guys even thought about what the Scandal fanbase in Japan thinks of these videos? It's weird because the majority of Scandal's fanbase is in Japan and yet, foreigners are able to put out high quality looking cover videos. Unless there have been similar efforts from Japanese fans and I just haven't seen them. But anyway, I wonder what they think about these covers. Are they indifferent? Are they impressed? There's this guy who applied for a drum position in the applications thread so he must've been impressed by the LMD project enough to want to be part of something like this.

Anyway, just something I've been wondering about. The girls themselves seem to like them.

There have been a few comments in Japanese in the LOVE ME DO YouTube vid although writing in nihon go doesn't necessarily mean you're Japanese hehe. That and Onegai got noticed by the band and from the retweets/likes on Twitter would mean that the Japanese fans would have watched the tweeted covers, explaining the surge of views in the first day of the vid being published, in addition to overseas fans who watch these anyway. I am only speculating here, I think seeing that the vid's pretty much in English everywhere else (titles, op/end credits etc) the Japanese kids would prolly be too 'shy' to put a comment down in English. Just guessing.

There are a a few Japanese fan covers of SCANDAL that I have found on YouTube. Like most other "bedroom covers" they are headless, taken in the comfort of their own homes etc. so in essence they are no different I guess.

As for "making an effort", the keionbu (music club) scene is pretty much fertile ground for high school kids to hone their chops, and if they are inclined towards SCANDAL (obviously encouraged by a burgeoning number of all-girl rock bands there in recent years), they'd form a "copy band" (as opposed to a cover band).



Some take part in comps, the biggest SCANDAL-related one is the annual comp in Tokyo judged by SCANDAL themselves. Obviously the winners don't end up being a cover band but progress on to do their own stuff. These bands have vids on YouTube and you may see them perform SCANDAL covers live. There's this regular event in a small club called Cat's Hole in Shinjuku, Tokyo called SCANDAL NIGHT where you see all levels of musicianship in there. Have a look at this video by Hikahorikku (they won the 2014 SCANDAL copy band comp if I remember correctly) covering Switch on one of the SCANDAL NIGHTS event:



I guess we do video covers as the nearest instrument-playing SCANDAL fan is a few thousand miles away in Indonesia/Germany/Canada etc whereas the Japanese only need to look at their schoolmates to do covers with, and instead of videos, they would play the covers live. Also, some use the covers as stepping stones to a music career!

gotta agree on this one, it is more convenient for them to just go live and play cover until they can have their own composition, their own following and their own image.

There are LOTS of them in fact.

I even saw various online recruitment for forming a band specifically to cover SCANDAL songs, from all over Japan. One more reason I am convinced are really big there.

Plus not once I heard that students mostly have started band and recording indie songs, following their steps (and of course reporting to the girls via radio shows or in person since they have a lot of chance to do so). And they are claimed to be one of the big factor why all-girl band trend is blooming right now in the country.

And plus Kudo is right, for them, they'll perform live, entering competitions etc instead

The idea just occurred to me sometime ago,
since SHCB is very lively recently (I mean, 5 projects announced within a span of 4 months! That's really cool! New record?)

I've been thinking,
how about we make one special cover project with more band members, for example maybe we can cover "Your Song" with 3 or more vocalists, more players on each instruments, so we can go (woooow! wooooow! wooooow!) together with all band members singing as well.

Just throwing out ideas, what do you guys think?

I can't sing but I guess I could handle WOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOO, WOOO .wew.

"Your Song" is among those I've been wanting to cover. There's about a dozen I'd like to do.
