Just leave the files in .m4a format and enable the "Sound check" feature in iTunes and your iPod/iPhone (or the equivalent feature of another device). You keep the quality of the files but won't get your ears blasted off every time the songs come up.
I also use MP3gain in conjunction with this but because of the DRM in .m4a files it can't analyze them. So I just soundcheck those files. Seems to work fine and dandy for 99% of my music (HARUKAZE still seems kinda loud for some reason -.-)
