Background and Build-Up
So, Perfume is an all-girl techno-group from Hiroshima.
2 of the 3 (present) members, Kashiyuka and Nocchi were born in 1988
A-chan was born in 1989
They originally consisted of:
Nishiwaki Ayaka (A-Chan)
Kawashima Yuka (Kawayuka)
Kashino Yuka (Kashiyuka)
Their name came from a Kanji in their name, meaning "fragrance," hence the name "Perfume"
Before Perfume debuted in Hiroshima, Kawayuka left the group to focus more on her studies.
A-Chan then was confronted by her mother (or grandmother, not really sure) and she said that a 3-person group has more of a presence than a 2-person group.
Therefore, Perfume then recruited Oomoto Ayano (Nocchi)
Note: All 4 members attended Hiroshima's Actors School.
There first Indies Single was Omajinai-Perori.
Second, was Kareshii Boshuchuu
Unfortunately, their sales were low.
The three then moved to Tokyo where they became part of Bee-Hive, which was affiliated with Amuse (who, I think, owned Hiroshima Actors School)
They were also approached by Nakata Yasutaka, a techno person who has produced music for many groups, including SMAP Kat-Tun. He also has his own group, CAPSULE, and produced the music for the show LIAR GAME.
He produced the music for their next 3 Indies singles.
(2003) Sweet Donuts
(2004) Vitamin Drop, Monochrome Effect.
Note: Monocrhome Effect was featured on American Dad (May the Best Stan Win) and was called "Japanese funk"
They then teamed up with DJ Moi-Moi in 2005 and produced Akihabalove (I dont know much about this, but I know it was not affiliated with their label: AMUSE)
Amuse then let Perfume have a Major Debut.
Their first Major Debut Single was Linear Motor Girl in 2005
Then, Computer City and Electro World.
Unfortunately, their sales were still relatively low.
They then released ~Complete Best~ in 2006 and were featured on Okite Porshe's (leader of a band) show, where they performed some of their songs.
2007
In 2007, they released Fan Service.
This Single consisted of Chocolate Disco and Twinkle Snow Powdery Snow.
There were 2 versions,Bitter LE and Sweet LE
With the help of people like Kaela Kimura, a producer for NHK's Summer Recycle Program heard their songs and asked them to be a part of the commercial.
This is when they had their fortune turned, they, along with Nakata, produced a song for the commercial (Polyrhythm)
In 2007, they released the Polyrhythm Single
The Single consisted of Polyrhythm and Seaventh Heaven (and both instrumentals)
This debuted at #4 on the Oricon Charts the day of its debut and #7 on the weekly charts
Perfume also had the opportunity to perform at Ebisu Liquidroom.
Thanks to Polyrhythm they gained publicity in Japan.
2008
In 2008, they released another Single: Baby Cruising Love/Macaroni
This Single consisted of Baby Cruising Love and Macaroni (also instrumentals)
They also re-released Fan Service: Bitter (Normal)
Another Version was also released ~Prima Box~ which was a re-release of their 3 Indies Singles they produced with Nakata, and a special Prima DVD
They released their Second Album: GAME.
It debuted at #1 on the Oricon Charts.
Also, ~Complete Best~ then sky-rocketed to the #5 selling album on Amazon.jp, despite its much prior release.
With this, they gained much more Press, appearing on TV shows, and appearing in many concerts (e.g. Summer Sonic Fest '07)
Perfume even had their own variety show, called: HAPPY! where they were joined by Nishioka Sumiko (Comedian) and CanCam model Nao-Chan.
They went on their first tour, appropriately entitled GAME. During this concert run, they announced their official fan-club:
P.T.A.: Perfume to Anata (Perfume and you) with A-Chan being member #1, Kashi #2 and Nocchi #3
They also announced that they will be performing at Nippon Budoukan that November
During the Summer, they released their 12th overall single: Love the World
This debuted at #1 on the Oricon Charts, the first techno-group to do this
The Single consisted of Love the World (and instrumental), Edge, and Edge ~extended mix~
Their First Tour: GAME was also released on DVD
At Nippon Budoukan they performed an un-released (at the time) Single: Dream Fighter
After Budoukan, Dream Fighter was released:
Consisting of: Dream Fighter and Negai, wish, (also instrumentals)
A portfolio was also released, all 3 girls promised to do this before they turned 20.
They also performed at Rockin in Japan Festival '08 (first techno group to do so) and Girl Pop Factory '08
2009
