So this was my first SCANDAL live; I wasn’t really sure what to expect since I haven’t exactly been keeping up with them nearly as much as I used to and (shock horror!) I still haven’t watched the recent hall lives (Budokan/Osaka Jou).
- Have they showed their true abilities now?:
Nonetheless, my friend and I arrived at Zepp Namba at about 5:30 (Thursday night). I decided to wear my SH tshirt XD. When we arrived, there was a huge queue – and this had us worried until we spotted signs showing numbers – so people were let in based on the number of their ticket.
We were in the venue by 6:30 and picked up our drinks (after paying another 500 yen at the door. I still don’t get why.) and I went a little crazy over the merchandise. I’ve been in Japan for three months now and I had a sudden relapse into the ‘Monopoly money~!” mindset. We headed straight for the women and children’s section – which happened to be riiiight at the front, on the right side of the stage. Read as: the MAMI side of the stage, and we managed to get a spot at the very back of the section, leaning against the barrier, in front of MAMI’s mic. I didn’t need to move any further. XD
So the lights go out and everyone's shouting and this mother of a song comes on:
Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream ... this is not dying, this is not dying...
(I'm already dying because I actually quite like this song! XD) and then the girls came out looking … very casual! No outfits and no reports on costumes had come from other news sites either, so I was wondering what had been going on. I think it really fit with the tone of the show – intimate and casual.
MAMI had redone her hair; it was back to platinum with the underside a bright turquoise, tied in its signature ponytail. She was wearing a purple sports jersey with shorts, and tattoo tights. She started with her custom paint job strat, and switched it throughout the show.
RINA was wearing a skirt and pale blouse, and her hair was styled as she’s usually doing it these days ; a mid-bob.
HARUNA’s hair was out, I don’t think she’d done too much to it. She wore a dark tank with short, frayed shorts. I can’t remember which guitar she started using, it’s already gone. O_O
TOMO was wearing a top and skirt as well; I think her skirt was white, but she wore a darker short sleeve top, with necklaces, and her dye job looked pretty good too – red’s definitely her colour. :/ I’m pretty sure I was just too overwhelmed by MAMI.
The first thing I noticed was that RINA wasn’t sitting behind the others anymore. They were all in line, MAMI and HARU on either side – a la ‘Awanai Tsumori no Genki de ne’. It made a huge difference in the show, I think – it’s probably the main reason why my friend is now a RINA fan lol.
As you can guess, the start of the show was really, really high energy. Another thing to note is that HARU-nee’s voice was spot on. That was what really made the show for me – it was clear she was having fun, doing her thing, and she wasn’t struggling with breathing or power. (Shows how long it’s been since I’ve been in the loop.)
Considering everyone was sweating by the time SCANDAL arrived, it was pretty crazy by the time we hit Rock’n Roll. Appletachi no Dengon was a crowd hit; we sang along in the chorus. LOVE SURVIVE, needless to say, was also off the rails (I love the pause before the (second) last chorus?). HARU did her usual crowd hype thing in the bridge, and got the tension going for Satisfaction, with a “Let’s sing this together!” before launching into the ‘wo-oh wo-oh’s.
When Sono toki came around, MAMI came forward and played the first chord a few times – the tone itself was unmistakeable – showing off her skills for a bit and the Jazzmaster. (And everyone had fun saying ‘abracadabra’) CUTE! flowed on quite well; MAMI brought out the Gretsch, surprisingly, but I guess its sound can’t really be replicated. HARU’s voice has changed, undoubtedly, but it still matched the song quite well. GLAMOROUS YOU was a surprise to me (despite having seeing some of the setlists) – but I love it as a song to just kind of bop along to in my bedroom haha. Audience participation was quite high, as well, as you’d expect with a song with random ‘wohoo’s in it. XD
And then the lights went red and they brought everyone down with Hoshi no Furu Yoru ni. The harmonisations were spot on and MAMI showed off her acting skills in the verse – I always love the way she plays. TOMO got a bit of spotlight before PLAYBOY with a slight bass solo. I had actually thought for a second they’d be doing Hi-Hi-Hi but… I was not disappointed with the alternative. (P-L-A-Y-B-O-Y says --)
Then they took a short break (I can’t remember if there was a short break before this, either. Odd. There definitely was, but I forgot where) and talked a bit about a new shop that had opened near them called ‘nagasoumen’ or something to that effect; a pun on the length of soumen, a type of thin noodles. And then they announced the next song they were doing was a bit of an old one, it was slightly nostalgic, but for those who hadn’t heard it before, SCANDAL hoped they would like it.
Kimi to yoru to namida.
I got chills. MAMI’s playing was emotionally charged and RINA was definitely bouncing off that with the intro – HARU’s voice is more mature than it was when they first recorded the track, and it was granted a new depth with a slight layering of effects over their voices. No one said a word at the song’s conclusion; the only lights on the stage were the yellow spotlights shone down on them, and they all looked down and away – a true, mature performance, and the highlight of the night for me.
Until RINA started playing the beat for Bitter Chocolate, which I hadn’t really ever paid attention to before. She stole the song from TOMO and HARU – everyone was craning to watch her play with absolute focus and joy; the complex beat and the sound of the bass drum was irresistible and mesmerising. Their new formation is definitely a credit to the band; it showcases songs like these perfectly. It was a flawless transition song to get out of the emotional rock ballad mood, into Awanai Tsumori (lighting matching the PV, actually), and then they took a short break to announce a few things; the new single, Band Yarou participants, the copy band contest, when they’re coming back to Osaka for a festival and some promotional events … and to play a new song.
Namida yo Hikare wasn’t completely unfamiliar; I’ve heard it from somewhere before, but I can’t quite place where. DOLL was typically high energy, with obligatory towel waving – by this point I was glad I hadn’t bought one for myself but my arms were slowly dying… ah, the joys of concerts. Then we hit the last song with TaiSCA – everyone loves singing the opening together, so we did that
And then the encore – it took about five or so minutes (I didn’t look at a clock actually) and they came back out wearing the usual Tshirts they were endorsing. They also talked about the merchandise theme being quite summery this time around, and the practicality of having a Canbrella. They went through the announcements one more time, and then asked what song they should play.
The crowd went crazy – “SHUNSEN~” “SP~” “SL~” “BABY~” (I secretly asked for Kagerou)
So we had a vote, and it was decided they would do a medley of Shunkan Sentimental and SCANDAL BABY. In typical fashion, TOMO was a bit confused and asked where they would split the songs – but HARU confirmed they would play both songs entirely. RINA also had to use her blingtastic monitors to play. XD And all too soon, it was over. We had poured our hearts into the encore and sang the bridge for SCANDAL BABY, but it was time to hand the night back to them and go our separate ways… but not before the final introduction of band members and high-five-ing and TOMO bumping into MAMI on stage. Cute, but not as cute as RINA girlcrushing on MAMI while playing :3
Something I observed about the girl’s crowd, actually. We occupied the right hand side; the left hand side was still general audience and they were going off. I wish I was lying but it seems some girls aren’t quite sure how to cut loose at a live – the people around us kept shooting looks at me and my friend every time we shouted. The voices of the audience are quite male; no one has issues with them shouting, so go nuts, guys. :PAs for the girls, I wouldn’t care too much; you’re here to have fun and watch SCANDAL, right? Just wear comfy shoes and don’t be too shocked when you see girls in platforms.

Mainstream ArtistArgh!! The lineup!!! The lineup!! Rina was in the front! All those Rina fanboys and fangirls must be happy their bias is like standing in line with the rest of the members~
I like their clothes and hope that its actually 'their' everyday clothes. That way their personalities shine more I guess and they each have their own individuality.

I want to thank your post a thousand times! It really makes me going crazy for the Otodama Sea Studio concert!
I actually planned to completely loose my mind there. I hope I won't be too embarassing for my japanese friend (she's a girl). .plank. In Germany usually the whole crowd is partying.
Once again, thank you for this awesome report! I almost have the feeling of having been there by myself!

If only I can give you a million thanks with your description of their concert =) =)
It felt like I was there while reading your post. I really want to see them perform live. How I wish they will visit their Filipino fans to show off their talents..whew!
Again a million thanks! =)

Thanks for the report! I'm jealous.
I'm not sure I'm into the idea of them wearing regular clothes for shows, though... I'm not one of those people that thinks they need to go back to the school uniforms (I agree with them that in their 20's, it no longer makes much sense), but *some* kind of uniform or costume... that's their image. Seeing them play in street clothes has to be like seeing KISS play without makeup...

Shiroten PerformerThat's my image of a rock band. Casual, full of energy and close to the fans.
Particularly, I don't like the costumes they wore on Budokan and Osaka-jo, I think it's more natural when the artist wear something closer to what they would wear in their personal times.
And I loved the fact they actually asked the fans what they should play for encore.

Hear, hear.
The regular set list changes is a welcome evolution for the band too IMHO. I am a big fan of bands who can 'wing it' every night - although I've to admit not many bands (including established ones) really do this, but for SCANDAL being able to do this now that's a major plus.

Well, most rock bands put some thought into what they wear to shows, no matter who they are, and Scandal definitely do this too. Playing a show for thousands of people is a special event both for the band and for the fans. It may seem like bands just wear regular clothes, but even real indie rock bands wear what they wear to project an image of an indie rock band. (I have some experience with this.) Scandal's band image just doesn't fit street clothes.
I know in their VERY early days they played shows in street clothes, but have they done that since even being signed to Kitty, much less Epic? Have they had other shows or tours since becoming popular where they've dressed in street clothes? I can't think of any myself.

AdministratorThat said, they haven't actually worn their regular street clothes for a live since their Shiroten days.
And as for the videos that kaitanuva posted, those are technically not street clothes. They just wore their tour t-shirts in place of their normal live tops, which they always do for the encore.
