It's interesting how they made it into the top ten with half the first week sales of previous releases. Either the sale of digital copies is starting to overtake the sale of physical copies like in the rest of the world, or sales are down over the board, like maybe the pandemic eliminated a lot of jobs for people the right age to buy music. Entry level jobs are typically occupied by folks in their teens and twenties, and a lot of places like cafes, small shops, and so on, went out of business. There might be less discretionary spending going on.
I think chart position is important in determining how much radio airplay a song gets, and how it's displayed in record stores, both of which help increase sales, and helps the public awareness of a band. I'm really happy Scandal has stayed up there in the charts and visible.
Also, I agree with SJM that the money's in live shows and merch, but that doesn't mean it's not good to recover as much of the recording costs as possible, right?
