SCANDAL - 2006-2007 Live Performance Timeline
This thread recaps all of SCANDAL's known performances from 2006-2007, as well the band's final few performances at Shiroten Street in early 2008.
It includes photos and translations of blogs from Caless's staff (the vocal & dance training school the band attended), as well as any other info that could be found from those who attended these performances.
Since the blog SCANDAL used for the majority of 2007 was shut down a long time ago and there are no archives of it, firsthand accounts of these events written by the band can unfortunately no longer be found.
Also, if you have any photos/videos/info on these performances that are not already in this thread, please do post them!

「 HEAVY RHYTHM FINAL 」 @ Namba Hatch (Osaka)
SCANDAL's first ever live performance, held exactly one week after the band formed (August 21, 2006). They performed a cover of Sadistic Mika Band's "Time Machine ni Onegai" (Do Me a Favor, Time Machine).
Here are the band's blog entries about that performance:

Here is what MASTERWORKS, a music producer/writer/etc. that is connected to the dance & vocal training school that SCANDAL attended, said about how the band got started + a brief blurb on their first performance:
Formed on August 21, 2006 at the two-year-old request of Kitty Rights & Entertainment who had been eager for Caless to form an "all-girl band." The band started with four members selected via auditions by gathering applicants within the school (almost all of them were amateurs). Being a dance & vocal training school, there was no formal band-training curriculum and none of the four members had instrument experience, making for pretty tough start. However, only one week after forming, they were made to perform as the opening act at the "HEAVY RHYTHM FINAL" performance held at Namba Hatch. The song they performed was "Time Machine ni Onegai." The photo (pictured above) is a live photo from then.
Here is another blog by MASTERWORKS written about the early days of the band:
There were some serious problems in regards to band activities. First, the members could only get together on the weekends. The reason being that two members were chosen from the Osaka branch, and two were chosen from the Nagoya branch. Since it was summer vacation when the band formed, they were able to practice at a training camp for the entire time. They were all students last year (2006), and after summer vacation was over, they would use the weekends to get together in Osaka. From the start, the Caless staff had given me the assignment to shape the band within a year, so it was quite difficult to get together only on weekends. I was worried about the biggest obstacle, which was whether or not they would like playing instruments.
There were a lot of problems, but all of those were proven to be unfounded.

「X'mas SPECIAL NIGHT ~Girl's Bar Esaka Passion~ 」 @ ESAKA MUSE (Osaka)
This performance is officially considered to be SCANDAL's first real live show (due to how quick their "HEAVY RHYTHM" appearance was). This is also one of the only times that MAMI's and TOMOMI's standing positions on stage were switched.
Here are the band's blog entries about the performance:

Here is what the staff said about this performance in the aforementioned blog:
- Spoiler:
*Photo 1
SCANDAL, Caless's first all-girl band, performed on Christmas at ESAKA MUSE.
*Photo 2
Since they had a lot of equipment to bring, we went with them via car to ESAKA.
*Photo 3
As we arrived early, we went to eat at a ramen place in front of the venue. By the way, it seems that MAMI doesn't like ramen that much.
This was their first live performance ever since they performed as the opening act for "HEAVY RHYTHM FINAL" held at Namba Hatch only a week after the band formed. Because it happened in the blink of an eye, this performance is considered to be their first actual live performance.
*Photo 4
This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the song all of the performers were to sing together at the end. The band were the third performers, but there were definitely a lot of amateurs among all of the performers (haha).
*Photo 5
By being the third performers, they endured tremendous strain. It was quite a remarkable thing backstage.
*Photo 6
I was surprised by the mistakes that were enough to defy my predictions. (*wry smile*)
Well, they did only form four months ago. They're super-beginners.
I've never heard a band's live performance such as this, so it was quite a shock. (*wry smile*)
Apologies to the audience for these beginners...
*Photo 7 + 8
Midway through, the sounds of the guitar (from early on!?) stopped being heard, and RINA's drumsticks went flying off somewhere*... (*wry smile*)
They'll be performing next at an event on December 29th, but the next time after that is scheduled for late February-early March. Hopefully they'll perform in Nagoya, too.
*Photo 9
Here's RINA, whom I wasn't able to get many photos of due to where she was on stage. (haha)
*The band talked about the drumstick mishap on a TV program.

「 CALESS SHOW CASE 2006 」 @ americamura FANJ twice (Osaka)
The band appeared at Caless's end-of-year live.
Here are blog entries about the performance by MAMI and RINA:
https://www.scandal-heaven.com/t13270-kusu-2006-12-30-mami

The following photos are from Caless's staff's blog.
Here is a fairly harsh review from an attendee of the performance:
- Spoiler:
The rumored band. Perhaps they're less of an "all-girl band" and more of a "bandol" [band + idol]? Maybe they can make it by filling the vacancy ZONE left. But with three of the four members being in high school, isn't that too late of a start? (^^;) Bands like ZONE or Whiteberry started from when they were in elementary school.
It's only been four months since they started. They have nice looks and everyone's taking them lightly. Well, that's all right. But if they're going to call themselves a band, that's not acceptable, is it? They still have a long way to go.
Their performance makes you feel anxious. If they're a "bandol," they should be more clear-cut about it (ZONE in their early days danced and didn't play instruments), and if they're serious about being an "all-girl band," they haven't yet reached the level where they can call themselves a band.
I couldn't tell their exact abilities since they only played original songs. Next time I'd like them to also play covers (since you can judge ability from that).
If they don't quit and continue on, they'll eventually start seeing results. Good luck.

「 Shiroten Street Live 」 @ Osaka Castle Park
This was SCANDAL's first performance on Shiroten Street (the street leading up to the Osaka-Jo Hall venue).
- More photos:
Here is what the Caless staff said the day before the performance:
- Spoiler:
Although we are a vocal & dance training school, we have a band called SCANDAL, and they will be performing tomorrow (Sunday, March 11) on "Shiroten Street" in Osaka Castle Park.
They will be performing from 2:20 pm...
But! It's apparently supposed to rain...
In case of cancellation, we will make an announcement via the band's blog.
The staff who watches SCANDAL's band lessons every weekend will be coming.
The Caless staff will teach them something if they don't understand it, but they've basically been left to study on their own.
Although we say "study," they've just been playing their instruments!
As with all things, I think the best way to improve is to fall in love with your instrument.
As a result, they've learned to copy things by ear.
They're still so unskilled that it's surprising, but they're working hard.
Each member is also interested in musical instruments and is working hard as hard as they can, so they finally got teachers to come and teach them some tips.
However, although SCANDAL has some luck, they will be staying in Izu to do some recording starting from the 15th. (haha)
They're looking forward to it, but they're under a lot of pressure.
Because if they can't play it, it won't be a laughing matter... (*wry smile*)
And it runs until the 20th...
There will be blogs about it, so please check those out.

「 SQUARE ENIX PARTY 2007 」 @ Makuhari Messe (Chiba)
SCANDAL's song "START" was used as the theme song for the video game Star Ocean: Second Evolution. They performed the song at the "Star Ocean Special Stage" held during SQUARE ENIX PARTY 2007 in Tokyo.
- More photos:
Here is what MASTERWORKS said about this performance + the tie-in with the game:
- Spoiler:
Having a featured song in a popular video game a mere six months after forming
SCANDAL received original songs at the beginning of its formation and challenged themselves to write their own lyrics, jumping 3-10 steps more than what an "ordinary band" would experience. They held their first live performance at a live house a few months after forming. Also, even though only half a year had passed since their formation, they recorded a song at a resort studio in Izu owned by Kitty. And, the girls triumphed over many rivals and were appointed to sing the theme song for SQUARE ENIX's popular video game "Star Ocean 2." Additionally, they had a chance to perform the song in front of 1,500 spectators at SQUARE ENIX PARTY 2007 held at Makuhari Messe.
Here is another staff blog entry:
- Spoiler:
SCANDAL, the band consisting of students from Caless's Artist Course from the Osaka and Nagoya branches, held a live performance last Saturday at "SQUARE ENIX PARTY 2007" by the game company SQUARE ENIX, held at Makuhari Messe.
As many of you may know, SQUARE ENIX is a game company that makes countless hits such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
You may be wondering, "...what does this have to do with SCANDAL???"
Actually, they will be singing the theme song for SQUARE ENIX's popular game "Star Ocean"!
They seemed quite nervous to be performing in front of more than 1,000 people at the event, but they were able to make it through in one piece.
It was decided around March and recording for it was completed during their stay in Izu, but we were unable to announce it until information about the game was disclosed.
Although the release date for the song is still undecided due to the release date of the "Star Ocean" game, it will be released within the year. [*Note: The "Star Ocean: Second Evolution" soundtrack was not released until May 2, 2008.]

Here is what the Caless staff said about the recording of the song:
- Spoiler:
We went to see SCANDAL, the all-girl band formed with students from Caless Vocal & Dance School's Osaka and Nagoya branches, during their stay in Izu.
By car...it's super far away. (haha)
It is a resort studio in Izu owned by Kitty, and they stayed there from March 15-21 to record.
However, it's been half a year since they picked up instruments. (*wry smile*)
The staff and the band had been in the studio since the 15th, so by the time we got there they had already finished recording rhythm and dubbing, and were in the middle of recording vocals.

「 ESAKA Passion vol.1 」 @ ESAKA MUSE (Osaka)
- More photos:
Setlist:
1. Space Ranger
2. Ashita no Ashita
3. Koi Moyou
4. Good morning (original version of "FUTURE")
5. again (original version of "Koi no Kajitsu")
6. Playboy
Here is what the Caless staff said about this performance as well as the performance the following day at KYOTO MUSE:
- Spoiler:
SCANDAL had live performances at ESAKA MUSE and KYOTO MUSE.
Thank you very much to everyone who came out to the venues amidst your busy schedules!
This was their first live performance at a live house in six months since their performance at the same venue (ESAKA) last Christmas.
They're still quite unskilled, but I dare say they've improved quite a bit since their previous performance. (*wry smile*)
Still, it's been less than a year since the band was formed.
Because they have a band history = a musical instrument history. (haha)
They'll continue to work hard, so they would appreciate your support!

「 GO!GIRLS!GO! 」 @ KYOTO MUSE (Kyoto)

Setlist unknown (though it's likely similar/the same as the performance the day before), but they did perform "Space Ranger," "again/Koi no Kajitsu," and "Playboy."

「 CALESS SHOW CASE~2007 SUMMER~ 」 @ americamura FANJ twice (Osaka)
Supposedly, this was the first time they performed "Koi no Kajitsu" under its new title, rather than the original title of "again."

Here is what someone seemingly connected to Caless said about SCANDAL's performance:
- Spoiler:
It's been a while since I personally have seen them play instruments. Oh, I did often see them handing out flyers for Caless events, haha.
So, my impression was that they can now properly play instruments. Well, the last time I saw them was their very first live performance, so they're wildly different compared to then, haha. Oh, the songs they played. It's good to play original songs, but perhaps they should play more exciting songs [like well-known covers]...
When Haruna went off stage due to guitar troubles, Rina quickly came to the front. I'm convinced that she's an attention seeker, haha.

「 Shiroten Street Live 」 @ Osaka Castle Park
- More photos:
Setlist unknown, but they did perform "Space Ranger."
Here's a short blurb about this performance from Caless's staff's blog:
Today, SCANDAL held a Shiroten street live in front of Osaka-Jo's train station.
According to them, it went well.
According to them...

「 club dinner 」 @ club asia (Tokyo)
No known photos from this performance. Supposedly, they debuted their song "Natsuneiro" here.
Here is what the Caless staff blogged a few days before the performance:
- Spoiler:
SCANDAL is coming to practice at 10.
Yesterday evening they went to a nearby band practice studio to rehearse for their performance on the 15th at club asia.
Sounds such as synths and sound effects will be played via a computer during their performance, so I will go with them. I'm a sound generator output (*wry smile*)
It seems that quite a few record companies will be coming to see SCANDAL during this performance.
I'm sure it's easy for many music-related people to come out to a performance in Tokyo.
Here is what the staff blogged the day before the performance:
- Spoiler:
We're now going to head to Shin-Osaka Station, meet up with SCANDAL, and head to Tokyo.
Their performance at Shibuya's club asia venue today will be their first performance in Tokyo.
Since this is a pretty important performance, the band has been practicing to death.
But trouble only happens during times like this, right? (*wry smile*)
They are made up of four members, and they do not have a keyboardist.
As there are some songs with synths in the recording, they will be performing together with a computer this time.
That's a long and irrelevant story to explain, so I will omit it. (haha)
I'm the person who operates the computer.
I just hit the enter key.
However, since computers are selfish, they don't care if you're in a bad mood.
I'll fight off that feeling of tension! (haha)
If you are in the Kanto area, please come by.
They are set to perform around 8 pm.
And here is what the staff said about the performance the day after:
- Spoiler:
SCANDAL performed at an event held at Shibuya's club asia yesterday.
Thank you so much to everyone who came out amidst your busy schedules!
The band's activities and performances have been centered in Kansai due to the members being from the Kansai and Nagoya areas, so this was their first performance in Tokyo.
That being said, it seems that the staff of our affiliated office Kitty invited a tremendous number of people involved in record companies, media, etc., and it turned out to be a live performance in a strange space (haha)
In these situations, adults never get into the groove and instead just intently watch the performance without making slight movements (haha).
The four band members knew about it all to some extent beforehand, but they slightly faltered a bit at the start of the first song (*wry smile*)
We'll, I'm glad that they were able to successfully complete it.
And here is what an attendee said about it:
- Spoiler:
Since SCANDAL, the all-girl band composed of members from the Osaka and Nagoya branches of Caless and are currently part of Kitty Rights & Entertainment, was to perform in Tokyo for the first time, I went to go see them.
N from Caless's staff had blogged that many music industry people would go to this concert to see SCANDAL, and a lot of people really did come out (*wry smile*)
Although this concert featured many bands, I'd say about 30 people left after SCANDAL's performance (*surprised*)
It was clear that they did not seem to listen to all-girl bands, so it was self-evident that they were not fans.
Event name: 「club dinner」
Performers (in order)
・3RD EYE MIND (18:29-18:53)
・Tobigumo (19:10-19:40)
・RIKA (19:54-20:14)
・SCANDAL (20:26-20:55)
・Romi (21:06-21:34)
・INJURY (Unknown)
+ + + + +
SCANDAL is a 4-piece band consisting of Tomomi Ogawa, Rina Suzuki, Mami Sasazaki, and Haruna Ono.
The band project was launched in July 2006, the members were chosen in August, and the band formed on August 21, 2006.
In other words, it's only been a year since the band was formed, and it's simply impressive that they're able to play like they do now despite the problem of distance between Osaka and Nagoya.
It's worth praising people for their hard work, but those who buy CDs and come out to concerts won't pay for such efforts. They pay for music and performances that entertain the listeners and the viewers. There is still a lot of work to be done in order for them to reach those levels of music and performances... That is the impression I had this time.
In the middle of their performance there was an accident where it looked like they would stop playing perhaps due to a mistake. People were looking at each other, and the atmosphere was enveloped in a kind of "Hey, hey, is this band okay...?" feel. (*wry smile*)
However, despite problems with their performance, their stage presence was quite good and they had huge smiles that made those watching happy. Their talk topics were a little lacking (*wry smile*) but had good tempo. Everything aside from their performance was quite good.
N of Caless helped so that the recorded songs were layered on top of the sounds, but isn't it fine to have only the live sounds be heard? You can listen to any elaborate arrangements on a CD, and at the time of a live performance you can make arrangements that can only be done by the members. You can also get the benefits of double guitars.

「 Unknown free event 」 @ Sun Street Kameido (Tokyo)
Other than SCANDAL performing two times on this day (5 pm and 6 pm), nothing seems to be known about this performance; only a flyer advertising it (which was passed out at the club asia performance the week before) remains:
2007.08.26
「 GET A DREAM 2007 」 @ CLUB DIAMOND HALL (Aichi)
No known photos, but here is what the Caless staff said about SCANDAL the day before:
SCANDAL will be performing as guests.
It's been exactly a year since MAMI and HARUNA from the Nagoya branch of the school have been going to Osaka every weekend, so I want them to do their best so that it's a huge moment for them.
And after their performance:
SCANDAL, who has now been a band + has now been playing instruments for a year, played two songs.
Usually, you'd be like, "I'll work harder," but they sound super good compared to two months ago, which is odd!? (haha)
But they did their best to not be outdone by the other bands and those in Nagoya.

「 GET A DREAM 11 」 @ Kadoma Citizens' Culture Center Lumiere Hall (Osaka)
No known information/photos, aside from "Koi no Kajitsu" and "Space Ranger" supposedly being performed.
