Are you a superstitious person?

What are some superstitions from your country?

I'm not a superstitious person.

A funny superstition my grandmother told me is that boys have to wear the underwear inside out to avoid being cursed by girls. (I promise I don't do that .whistle. )

i believe in superstitions  ^^ im sharing one experience.
this is when i was in the PH. it is when i was singing very loud in the forest and it is said that u shouldnt be too loud 'cos there are certain creatures living in the forest. so that happened and after that, i caught a fever for no specific reason and days before i was healed, people around me told me that i saw a kapre but i dont have any memories of it.
i remembered that i was sleeping that time and when i woke up, there were a lot of people surrounding me, looking confused. i wondered why there were many people around me when i was only having a fever lol. so, after that, my cousin told me that i saw that thing and then i realized the reason why i caught a fever and probably that thing had my memories erased when i saw it.

I am not superstitious, but there are funny popular beliefs in my country, for the most part, these are stories of grandmothers

As Bread upside down on the table, walking under a ladder, be 13 to table, open an umbrella in a house, it's bad luck.
Knock on wood by making a wish, touch the beret's red pompom of a sailor, walk with the left foot in a dog turd ( .whistle. ), it's good luck.

I think it's a bit odd that I choose to remain skeptical when it comes to superstitions but I find this thread interesting to read for the reason that I am curious to know about some superstitious beliefs of people from other countries. I always thought Philippines have the most of these things but it seems that I am wrong. Happy

Anyway, I'd like to share a few although I don't believe in them. For me, they are just passed on through our ancestors along with some traditions and urban legends.

- In the Philippines, I've been told by my mother that when you have to go outside especially at night you have to say "Tabi tabi po" which translates as "Excuse me" in English because some Filipinos believe in supernatural entities like dwarves. Going out late at night especially on a deserted place with tall grasses and trees, they would say you might come across one and hurt them unintentionally by stepping on them, thus you have to be polite by excusing yourself. xD

- If you see many black ants in your house, it means there is a good fortune awaiting for you (a lot of money)

- Taking a shower at night lessens your blood, you might get anemic for this. (Apparently this is just a hoax, there is no scientific explanation for this) xD

- Sweeping the floor with a broom/cleaning at night is a no-no, it drives away good luck and good fortune.

- At New Year's eve, the purpose of fireworks is not just for people to have a good view. some Filipinos believe that the noise produced by fireworks drives away bad spirits from your home so you could live in peace the whole year.

Another thing, I think this applies to other countries too.

There is a belief that if you come across with a black cat, it means you will have bad luck.

I don't believe those though, just sharing what we have here. Happy

There are more from El Salvador:

-If a crow cry during the early morning in the roof of you house, someone is going to die. .wtf.
-Babies have to wear something red to avoid being cursed. .upwalk.

-If a baby gets cursed and is sick because of that, you have to rub eggs on his/her body. WTF Onion

-Boys have to wear his underwear or socks inside out to avoid being cursed by a girl. .whistle.

-If you don't respect cross day (May 3rd), the demon is going to your house to dance at night. .dance.

Can't believe no one shared anything on this thread for a year! Happy

Anyway, It's a coincidence.. I have something I just remembered that I should also post on here.

In our country, (the Philippines) there is a superstitious belief about pregnant women during child conception. In our language, it's simply called paglilihi or lihi. It has no direct English translation but is simply limited to as pregnancy sickness.

Lihi is when a pregnant woman in her first trimester causes her husband hell. She throws up in the mornings. She’s constantly moody and irritated. She craves the most impossible food to get a-hold of at 2AM, but here's the odd part: some, especially old Filipinos have a belief that pregnant women taking a significant liking during to something during child conception will cause her unborn child to look like whatever took her fancy during pregnancy.

For example if she liked Hello Kitty (sorry for the nonsensical example, I can't think of anything xD) there is a possibility that her child will look like Hello Kitty. Bizarre, I know, but the fact is that it's still pretty much believed in our culture.

I recall when one of my office mates was pregnant and I was just well, passing by.. another co-worker told her that if she wanted her unborn child to look like a doll she should stare at me. Not to brag about this but I honestly don't know what to say when people compliment something about me, so I just gave another sheepish smile. Oh well.. Tongue
