Four of my favorite Japanese movies deals with Japanese girls. Don't know why.
1) Hula Girls: Starring Aoi Yu. Based on a true story of a small mining village has to change with the times. The mining company decides to cut back production and open a Hawaii themed resort. They recruit the local girls to perform in the resort's hula show and hire an out of work, in debt, alcoholic dancer from Tokyo to teach them.Hula Girls spans all emotions. There are three time I cried and still cry every time I watch it.
2) Swing Girls:A very funny movie about a group of misfit high school girls, through some unfortunate events, have to cover for the high school band and start their own swing band.
3) Kamikaze Girls: Starring Kyoko Fukada and Anna Tsuchiya.Quirky surreal comedy about two very opposite girls who somehow make their friendship work. I loved the style of the movie and the actresses show some great acting chops.
4) Linda Linda Linda: Starring Korean actress/model Doon-na Bae and Baseball Bear bassist Shiori Sekine. Four high school girls deal with all the stuff of being teenagers while trying to get ready for a gig at the school festival. The movie features songs from J-punk band The Blue Heatrs and scored by Smashing Pumpkins member James Iha.
All these films are available on Netflix with english subtitles.
