Haruna's rig is starting to look a little like Mami's...with a Fuzz Factory and Ikon...

The good ol' OCD is back!

It seems that Haruna is cutting the size of her pedal board since she already uses two totally different tube amps. I believe that the Fuzz Factory is meant as a treble booster (like Eric Clapton did with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in the 60s) for their songs such as the brand new Suki-Suki and Shoujo S 2016 version.

A bit off-topic about the Rockett Pedals ARCHER Ikon, it is the more affordable clone of the now legendary and ridiculously expensive Klon Centaur.

@kudo_maharizu: Thanks for the great info! I have heard that those lovely Yamaha LS36 guitars are still being handcrafted in Japan. Unlike, LS6 and LS16 which I am saving up for which are made in either in China or Taiwan. But, they still go through the laborious Yamaha quality control. It's a great alternative for Martins and Taylors.

It appears that MAMI's not the only person with new gear this tour. It seems that HARU may have included a Fender American Professional Series Telecaster Deluxe Shawbucker.

I personally don't but when I first read about it online, Tim Shaw's been a Fender employee who happens to be a pickup expert.

I think of pickups like food, and these pickup experts as being chefs, I guess. Everyone's got their own take on how to make a pickup type eg Seymour Duncan has his, Abigail Ybarra has hers - may it be from the number of winds, material for the bobbin etc. I guess Tim Shaw's got his.



Therefore, on the American Pro Series Tele Deluxe, that's Tim's take on the split humbucking pups.

It's not a hollowbody, for one thing. I've always felt like that's why she plays the Thinline; she busts it out in the middle of shows and it's a lot lighter than her other Teles.

As for the pickups, I really doubt it's much more than marketing. I notice they're not even calling them "wide ranging humbucking pickups" anymore, which is what they called their previous modern split HB pickups, to try to align them with the real ones they made in the 70's. But none of the modern ones bears any relation to those; they're just Gibson style humbuckers. These are probably the same, with some tweaks.

I don't really think Haruna cares what kind of humbuckers she has as long as they're humbuckers. Judging from the video posted, she probably has this guitar to match colors with Mami.

I also think this must be part of some kind of marketing deal with Fender... the video above is from what looks like a launch event for the Fender American Professional series (this is a new series Fender is promoting) and Haruna's Tele even still has the sticker on it, like they just gave it to her.

Some updates on HARU's gear at the SCABEST47 tour, courtesy of the Sept 2017 ish of GiGS.



As alluded in the IG photos during the tour back in March ( https://www.scandal-heaven.com/t8879p75-haruna-s-gear#748167 ), included in her arsenal is this Fender American Professional Series Telecaster Deluxe (her other guitars on this tour were her Skullsilver and the black/white Tele Thinline Deluxe). The caption in the mag described that HARU used this on Stamp!, DOLL, Flashback No.5 and ESY.

As for her pedals, they were the same on this tour as it was in 2016:

I coincidentally have owned a Fulltone OCD pedal for about five years. It is a great drive/fuzztone. Very warm.

Again looking at Google Translate in context - I tried to form the gist of (what I think) HARU is saying about her new Tele. She chose a look that is both current and long-lasting (MAMI seems to say the same thing - about wanting to be able to use her guitar for a long time, which is a good thing considering these customised babies don't come cheap). The finish is in white with gold binding and hardware - pickguard, pickup plate and tuning pegs. With more of SCANDAL's songs having to switch between clean and crunch tones, she opted for more power in this guitar (note the hot rails at the bridge).

Unfortunately, even with the scan, I cannot make out the make of her bridge pup - although the whitish tinge on the left of the pickup may well mean it's a DiMarzio (the ones they do for the Tele are the Chopper, Fast Track, Super Distortion and Tone Zone). This bit is mere speculation, though.

Translation:

Putting an emphasis on appearance, I thought that a design that suits my current age and a guitar that I can use for a long time would be best. Since I have many guitars with dark-colored bodies, I made the body white and made parts such as the edges, tuning pegs, and pickups gold to bring out a sense of quality. Sounds don't rely on power, and I emphasized that aspect because we've had an increase in songs that are played with clean/crunchy sounds.

From the look of the guitar, I will assume Haru's new axe take reference and shares several features with the Ritchie Kotchen's signature telecaster. That means the PUs are very possibly DiMarzio Chopper and Twang King. Well that is just my speculation.
Sure Haru will find the block style saddles comfortable especially during fast paced palm mutted power chords!

Yamaha Guitar LABO VOL.3 HARUNA (SCANDAL) with LS36 ARE 【Go!Go! GUITAR Playback】

This is a column series called 「Yamaha Guitar LABO」 that has pro musicians who play an active role in the music scene talk about the appeal of Yamaha guitars that they love. We'll be introducing HARUNA of SCANDAL, an all-girl band representing Japan both in name and reality!


The comfort while playing it is the best I've ever experienced, and it doesn't get lost among the band sounds!


After we shot the music video for our single "Sisters," I was looking for an acoustic guitar that sounded clearer, easier to play, and would fit in my hands better when performing live. The comfort while playing it is the best I've ever experienced! As I did not play acoustic guitar that much in the past, my right hand would get tired when I strummed the guitar. However, it doesn't feel tired at all with the LS36 ARE! Because its high-range components are strong, it stands out and doesn't get lost among the sounds made by the band in its entirety.

What I think is appealing about Yamaha guitars is that they're very suitable for beginners. I haven't really played acoustic guitars in the past that much, but I think I'll be playing them quite a bit from now on. That's why something that makes sounds easily truly is good to have.
