Just take the Final Fantasy franchise for instance. The later games (FFXII, FFXIII and FFXIV) have all been either pretty terrible or outright bland in my opinion. Even with the possibilies there (with new engines), games does not automatically get better. And I'm not saying that's what
you think or anything. But that is why for me, an new engine does not matter too much. Because without good writing, story and gameplay I'm just not that interested personally.
dude thats what ive been saying! the potential of this engine is promising and exciting. what they do with it and who uses it is another story.
and to your examples about the other stuff (XII is pretty highly regarded btw, with many saying its the best FF games since the SNES versions), the problem with the others (xiii, ffxiv) is that the games were mismanagement and and were left with an inexperience team and inexperienced directors (which is a general problem now with japanese developers, not just square) . every old final fantasy developers left square before those games were in development. that doesnt mean it was the techs fault.
give a random inexperienced person the highest end camera doesnt mean theyll take good pictures, however the possibilities with that camera is still there. its on the user. and again THAT is the purpose of showing this tech in the first place, to show the potential which is again, for me, is exciting.
Yeah, I know the potential is there and it depends on what they do with it. I only meant
because a new engine doesn't equal a good game, I don't really care about it.
Don't know where you heard XII is highly regarded though. I know Famitsu gave it a really high score but pretty much every fan I've talked to think it's either pretty bland or plain bad. And I've been a member on many FF forums. The forum I'm on the most now everyone thinks the same too about it. I'm not saying you're wrong, just interested since I've heard the opposite pretty much.
I hated XII, it had the most boring storyline of a Final Fantasy game yet, and they didn't make any effort to evolve on any of the characters. Vaan and Penelo must have been the two most useless characters in a FF game yet too. It was just "go there to get a new power" basically. Combat system wasn't that engaging either.
Many I've talked to really like XIII for some reason though. I thought it was decent but way too flawed. The combat system played itself until you reached post-game stuff. The villain was so
horrible it was sad, the storyline was again pretty bland and unpersonal as was the dialougue for the most part. The game did look gorgeous though.
I don't think Square has made anything great since before they merged with Enix. I don't know if the merge affected them or if it's a coincidence but many feel the same as me. Granted, I have high expectations of a game with FF in the title since they have made such masterpieces in the past. Or I should say I "had" high expectations. They are gone now.
@patstar: I have heard some rumors about a FFX remaster, but I don't think that will happen. Although, we haven't seen or heard much from it so perhaps. HD remakes are usually out pretty fast or at least given a release window but there has been nothing but silence regarding FFX HD.
And as for FFVII remake, I don't think that will happen. People from Square have even gone on record saying there won't be one. But you know, if you have the patience to wait about 20 years then if SE is still around, a remake isn't that unthinkable. When the gaming industri has moved further from this era, I think it could actually happen.
