As I have been a fansubber and translator for awhile now, I usually also translate and understand the meaning of the names of the characters in shows I usually work on.

It just got me thinking, what were the meaning of the names of our ever favorite SCANDAL members. Yeah, I know that their screen names tend to be stylized like how "SCANDAL" is - in romanizations and in all capital letters. But their whole names were registered at the vocal and dance school, CALESS, where they met each other, so the internet knows more or less their full names.

And if you actually lived in Japan and studying kanji and calligraphy, one time in your class as you grow up in elementary school, you will be asked what does your name actually mean given from the kanji in your Japanese name. Of course, there are instances that their given name tend to be in Hiragana or Katakana, which actually doesn't have meaning (to the dismay of some of the students hoping for a cool meaning with their name).

So anyway, I took the liberty to somewhat translate the meaning of the names of our favorite Scandal members X3

But here's the fun part - I am not sure how to translate the first names of Mami and Timo. Their first names are written in Hiragana wherever I looked. I've provided a link in the trusty Jisho website in the meaning of their first names. What do you guys think would be the best interpretation of their first names? :D

HARUNA - Ono Haruna
小野 (Ono) - plain; field
春 (Haru) - spring season
菜 (Na) - vegetable
小野春菜 (Ono Haruna) - "The vegetable in the spring season from the fields"? XD;;

MAMI - Sasazaki Mami
笹 (Sasa) - bamboo grass
崎 (Zaki) - sandspit; promontory
笹崎 (Sasazaki) - "sandspit bamboo grass"
まみ (Mami) - it can mean these bunch of things

TOMOMI - Ogawa Tomomi
小川 (Ogawa) - streamlet; brook
ともみ (Tomomi) - it can mean these bunch of things

RINA - Suzuki Rina
鈴木 (Suzuki) - bell wood; bud tree
理 (Ri) - justice; logic; truth
菜 (Na) - vegetable
鈴木理菜 (Suzuki Rina) - "A logical vegetable from a bud tree"? XD;;

So far my favorite speculation of Mami's first name would be:
満光 - which means "full light"

And my favorite of Timo's first name would be:
智 - which means "wisdom"

So yeah, what do you guys think of Mami's and Tomomi's first names mean? X3

Haruna's and Rina's name hahahaha......the meaning make me laugh... but I appreciate what you're doing (I don't understand hiragana or kanji ) keep on the good work my friends......

So far I've seen 2 different translations of Timo's name...
友(friend)美 and
知(wisdom)美.

I wonder which one would be her "real" name. Or something else...

The "full light" is nice for Mami but not sure about the "wisdom" for Tomo ^^

The reason why I used the kanji for "wisdom" for Timo is that she writes most of the lyrics in their songs, especially in their earlier years.

I don't get how to use the links for Tomomi and Mami's first names. They direct me to a page with a bunch of kanji but no English translation. Do I have to copy and paste each into translate or something (hope not)? 

I saw on Wikipedia that Mami's name's meaning also include "jasmine, truth, beauty, etc". Are those right?

I was suppose to say that as well.

For me, Jasmine suits well as an Anglicanized name for Mami.

Tomomi is a unisex name. There are bunch of famous guys from Japan who has the same first name. I wonder if she marries a guy who also goes by the name Tomomi someday, LOL!

Haruna's name actually means vegetables based on Kanji, LOL! I initially thought it was Apple.

So, Rina means vegetables as well. In our country, Rina is another derivative of Regina or Reyna which means queen. Rina can also be derived from Katrina and Sabrina.

The Japanese name Tomomi can be used for a girl or boy and can mean any of these things !

You mean in writing the kanji? I know there are rules in writing kanji characters (like which stroke comes first then next. They're all over the internet :D
If you were to write their whole name, Surname comes first then their first name

I assume you mean is it written vertically like classical Chinese or left-to-write like most European languages.

The answer is: Both/either.

Depends on the situation. I know that really formal writing tends to be read vertically, starting with the right-most column and proceeding to the left. However, things like e-mails and text messages and such are written left to right.

Not always these days, some of my Japanese friends have adopted the western way with given name first and family name second.

Thanks guys  and yes, I mean in kanji hehe I wanted to know because I have seen many books written vertically and also seen posts written horizontally so I wanted to know if there was a special rule about names XD plus are Tomomi and Mami's names written in hiragana or do they have kanji also ??
