I've been trying to learn Japanese myself. I've been wanting to for years but only started in January 2008. Then I moved so I kinda stopped for two years and now I'm back at it.

I'm having trouble learning vocabulary, however. It isn't like learning English at all. Now I'm watching Japanese series rather than reading books.

This website is a nice and free one to learn japanese with a lot of interesting content.
A lot of videos and stuff to make your studies enjoyable.
It also has a "RPG" where you interact with the people and you have to learn the lessons in order to know more vocabulary for the game.

I learned by myself and I'm still in the process of learning ^_^ Just be patient and everything's gonna be fine :D I highly suggest making a twittter account and post everything you wanna say in Japanese.. that's how I practice xD

Hey, I agree. I personally prefer to write it down on paper to practice, but we don't always have a pen and paper with us. But with twitter, I can just try to phrase what I want to express and keep editing from there. Great practice, I'd say.

livemocha.com = great place to start learning my own language (Malay) and Japanese or other language from START!

Try lang-8.com. It's some kind of community to learn any language. So you post something in Japanese about anything, and the others will correct your writing for you. You can also help the others that learn your native language by correcting their post. Really good site to practice your writing

I think the best way to go, once one has learned the basics, is to actually have a conversation. So the best would be a website where you can actually meet up with Japanese people who speak English and hone your skills.
