Hi!
Guys i'm doing a design project, the topic will obviously focus on Scandal. The thing is that i need help with a research topic, and the question is:
What issues have generated conflict around Scandal during its run, or what kind of issues have generated social tension among its fans?
I just need you to mention "the topic", to continue with the work. I'm in the research part, that's why I raise the topic so you can give me some ideas and help me. The idea is not to debate or generate controversy, i just need your opinions.
Thank!

SCANDAL's not exactly a conflict-generating band despite their name lol, so there are very few things I can think of.

But I would say one of them would definitely be the "Koisuru Universe" music video and the scene of MAMI and TOMO kissing. Some people got all weird about it and some even said they'd stop being fans, which was a little ridiculous imo lol

And I guess when they did a shoot for this magazine in March 2012 in short shorts and some people (mostly dudes) freaked out and said they "showed too much skin." You can see a bunch of reactions in that thread I linked to.

Thank you, that's the kind of information I'm looking for.
Yes, Scandal is not really a controversial band. But sometimes people comment things out of context.
As I'm not one to pay attention to those topics either, I forget them easily.

The controversial subject of auto-tune flares-up just about every time it's employed - either for stylistic purposes or for tweaking the lives, after the fact.

As for the "raunchy" photos or videos, I'm cool with anything that they are/were cool with doing. Every time they do something a little racier than usual, they tend to revert back to their regular wholesome selves afterwards so it's not like they're selling themselves out and changing their image to appease the dribbling dimwits out there.

They're pretty much dressing like nuns nowadays so, yeah, we can all thank our lucky stars they had fun when they did. You're only young once!

There were similar reactions to their 2009 Best Scandal album photobook (I can't seem to find the exact thread on SH right now) and their 2015 Rolling Stones shoot (tho most of the negative comments I saw were on Scandal's official social media and not SH). But like Haruna's Ears, I think no one has a right to judge them for what they wear or don't wear; they're grownass adult women who can make their own decisions after all.

Another area of social tension could be their feminism. They've made it clear since day one they're feminists, and although I don't see international fans giving them flak for it, it seems they occasionally encounter ignorance or even resistance in Japan. E.g. a Fender Japan guy saying something sexist to Haru, Rina saying in one of her VLOGs that at festivals the male bands unconsciously treat them like eyecandy instead of peers etc.

Most people were not fans when they changed their logo.

I recall a lot of backlash from fans on Instagram the year they dressed up in Native American clothes during one of their halloween shows. And Rina deleted an Instagram photo that she took in a second hand store because of fan backlash to a flag that was in the background.

I think the music video of "Taiyo Kimi Ga Egaku Story" caused a minor stir amongst international fans because of certain scenes like synchronized gyration in the second stanza of the song, and the camera angle on Mami's guitar solo. Our fellow fans who are practicing Roman Catholics were either curious or a bit concerned with the band members wearing neon-colored rosaries.

Well for starters, I can think of situations where they have acted courageously and put our some edgy lyrics.
Koisuru Universe did have a “controversial” MV, but the vid did fit with lyrics like “even God/s can’t keep back” people who are drawn together. Sure some fans were pissed but I bet more were happy with the idea of boundless love.
A  couple of years earlier, Kill the Virgin was also controversial! Some fans thought the band must have been instructed to do this song because singing about this female experience was too “risqué” to fit their image of SCANDAL. I think the band was cool with it though.
Their 2017 single Freedom Fighters was about challenging the status quo, demonstrating in the streets, “the revolution,” etc. Nothing specific but kinda radical for sure.
Soon after the 3/11 tsunami and Fukushima meltdown, some girls who met in evacuation centers formed bands, and invited various rock groups to come to meet and perform with them. SCANDAL came, I think they were the only ones who did.
In 2015 SCANDAL was picked to represent Japan in the annual all-Asia broadcasters music event in Istanbul. They performed their current single Sisters. It was gutsy of them to take the opportunity to make a clearly feminist statement to a broad audience like that.
A little more than a week after they were in Turkey, a deadly bomb exploded in the same marketplace they had visited. That same year they played Le Bataclan in Paris a few months before the massacre there. Neither of these terrorist events had any direct connection with SCANDAL but it shows how close to tragedy cultural workers like them can come in today’s world.
On another note, there are dangers that come from being unaware of history, especially when touring other countries. For example I saw a pic of Rina wearing a leather jacket with a map of pre-World War II Germany framed by the US and German flags—message: “The US will help us Germans take back all that Polish territory that used to be part of the German Empire.” I hope she didn’t wear that when they performed in Wroclau, right in that very ex-German part of Poland!
Another example is when they did their first concert in Korea, fans were commenting how “now SCANDAL will conquer another country”—totally unaware of what that would sound like to Koreans, who were colonized by Japan and had to furnish “comfort women” to the Japanese army.
Some people, especially Americans, may be uncomfortable with the concerts SCANDAL did in China (PRC). But from what I hear, no matter how much the governments of China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan argue and threaten each other, the people everywhere seem to keep on loving each other’s culture, including pop music. I’m sure SCANDAL, like most culture workers, want peace to win out.

Woo, this was a great deep answer, so much more than I thought at the beginning of my question. Thanks for your answer, it is true that due to lack of knowledge we all make mistakes from time to time.

Maybe not direct social tension but SCANDAL for sure has often caused some discord among some fans.
Usually relating to their image or music direction. BABY ACTION was a big point of contention for some when they dropped the school uniforms and some songs had a more pop feel to it. I remember seeing some people saying they were gonna drop the band. And this kinda continued on and off when a new song wasn't another Shunkan Sentimental. Now I'm glad to see people are  openly embracing SCANDAL experimenting with new songs.

Then there was the Overdrive MV that had some upset because it seemed so immature and I specifically recall someone saying "They're not taking their target audience into consideration" which funny enough was right after Awanai and kagen No Tsuki which had very cool and mature MVs.

Though I think these are issues most bands with long histories face.

Ugh! Out of all things written here so far, this one is probably the most disturbing one I have read.

You have to admit that they are four very attractive young ladies & it's been fascinating to see them develop from what we see in the videos of them as four rather gauche young school-girls busking on the Shiroten in Osaka Castle Park to what they are now.

Well, I don't know if it's exactly germane to the topic of social tension or maybe of casual interest but in 2019 my wife & I were in Japan for the Rugby World Cup & for a couple of days found ourselves in Kyoto. One afternoon we were taking a short-cut through some back streets to get back to our hotel when I noticed a shop window with an interesting T-shirt showing an image of a Shinto "Kitsune" on the front. Now I'm a bit of a T-shirt addict (I've probably got more than I can get through in my life-time) so we went in so I could buy it & much to our consternation we found the place was a hard-core porn shop complete with sex-dolls & all the rest. Anyway, undeterred I selected my size (T-shirt not sex-doll) & took it to the till to pay only to be confronted by a pile of cellophane wrapped copies of HARUNA's photo-shot book "SOMEWHERE" stacked on the counter. I was quite taken aback that something like that, with only a few harmless swim-suit & underwear shots, would be considered hard-core porn in Japan.
