So it's been a long journey to this point. The point of how I found SCANDAL. Bare with me this story covers about 8 years. I just feel like sharing my story.
It all started back when I was a freshman in high school, I'm 22 now. I got curious of American 80's music. So I searched some on YouTube. I found out that I liked songs where there would be a female singer. So I started listening to 80s Madonna and 80s Kylie Minogue. Kylie Minogue has a song call "Turn It Into Love", and it was one of my favorite song then. While watching videos of the song on YouTube, there was a Japanese version in the related videos. I decided to click it and became hooked, the duo that singed it is called Wink. I started to become interested in 80s Jpop and decided to explore some more. I found a 80s Jpop compilation video and it led me to whole new artists and songs. Kawai Sonoko was an idol I very much liked, which is why I picked her name as my account name. I mostly listened to 80s Jpop, Kylie and Madonna throughout high school. I do have regular American modern songs too, but back to the story. After high school I joined the United States Marine Corps and was fortunate enough to be stationed in Okinawa. While there I became curious about popular Japanese music today. I listened to some Koda Kumi and Utade Hikaru but not on a regular basis. 80s Jpop was still my favorite genre. About a year on Okinawa I discovered BabyMetal on YouTube. I remember watching their "Gimme Chocolate" song on YouTube when it only had 3 million views. It was a catchy song but I never explored any deeper into the band. Fast forward a year, I get restationed in California. Still listening to mainly 80s Jpop and some BabyMetal "Gimme Chocolate". Kpop being very popular at the time. I would listen to some kgirl pop groups. This led to me watching Kpop with Jpop videos. I remember one video had SCANDAL "Syoujo S". It did catch my eye, the girls looked so tough and unique, the music was catchy and they were all pretty. This was the first time that I was exposed to SCANDAL. But at the time I thought that they were just another typical Japanese group wearing uniforms, so I did not explore. 6 months later I get sent back to Okinawa for some training for 6 months. By this point the only 80s Jpop I was listening to were some of Sonoko Kawai's music and one or two songs that I really liked from other idols. I had a mix of Kpop, 80s Jpop, Jpop, BabyMetal "Gimme Chocolate", StereoPony "Hitohira No", SCANDAL "Syoujo S" and some other kinds and types of music. Becoming more curious with Jrock girl bands I watched "5 Japanese All-Female Rock Bands: The Land of the Rising Riff" on YouTube. Haruna took me away in the "Shunken Sentimental" preview. That same day I started to search a bunch of SCANDAL's music videos. I became hooked. Reaching the end of my 6 months left on Okinawa, it's 2017, May. I realized that SCANDAL was actually going to perform in Okinawa in June. I have never ever been to a concert and I wouldn't mind making SCANDAL my first. But my training ended and I had to go back to America. I was soo bummed out about that. Probably my only chance to ever see SCANDAL in person.
Their early songs got me interested because they are all so gorgeous and make catchy music. Their later songs made me stay because of how talented and beautiful they are. There's so much to admire about them, I can't type it all. I'm just fortunate enough to be able to discover them.
But yeah, this is how I ended up to this point in time. Please feel free to share your discovery story of SCANDAL. And thanks for reading.
