because i'm not a native speaker... or a speaker of Japanese at all actually, i cannot tell... but when the members of SCANDAL are speaking... at lives, in interviews on tv or radio, etc... are they speaking with a Kansai accent? or if they speak "standard" Japanese, does an accent slip out once in a while?

Haruna speaks in standard japanese. Rina and Tomomi speaks in dialects. Mami speaks mostly in standard japanese.
"With ticket, it took us 5 minutes to get from Shiroten to Osaka Jyo-Hall. But for SCANDAL, it took them 6 years."

Shiroten PerformerI always find that Haruna also speaks way too fast...
I don understand the language perfectly or even borderline
But most of the time i can still make out each syllable
But when it comes to haru she always feels lyk a race car...
Oh well..more practice for me

International PerformerI thought they all knew their dialect... I'm probably wrong on that one.... because I know literally 0 Japanese but I could tell when Tomo was talking in her dialect, it sounded like some southern Chinese dialect I swear....

I have to agree about Haruna.
I can understand some spoken Japanese but I always have trouble with Haruna because she speaks so fast !
My Japanese friends tell me the girls have an Osaka accent.

Mainstream ArtistI wonder if I'll ever get to be good enough at Japanese to be able to hear different accents. I still remember the first time I heard someone speaking Chinese after I'd been studying Japanese a bit. It was such a shock because I'd never been able to tell the difference before I was into Japanese stuff, but when they spoke it was so, so, so obviously "not-Japanese".

Caless StudentIntresting... I'm gonna have to find some interviews of them talking. I can understand them when they sing. I was able to actually watch all of L ~Change the World~ (Death Nothe 3 movie) without subtitles. I was so stoked that languge lessons finally paid off. That movie is quite good by the way, watch it! But I wonder if I can maybe start trying to understand the different dialects. I do know however that when I was playing Yakuza 2 for the Playstation 2 the main bad guy was from Kansai and had like a country accent. And since 2 was subbed ant not dubbed like the first Yakuza game. I'm assuming it was an authentic Kansai accent. But I played it before I really started learning Japanese so I just read the subs during the cut scenes. .hmmm.

Shiroten PerformerI often hear Rina speaking in Kansai dialect. Tomomi doesn't sound like she uses too many dialectal speech elements to me. However, as my Japanese improves I may notice more if it's there.

Caless StudentI know this is an old thread but just to contribute. My main contribution is towards Mami.
In terms of dialect:
Haruna - She seems to stick pretty standard as you guys said
Rina - She can't Kansai ben all over the place because people wouldn't understand but she does it and I even watched an interview where the others complained that she did it too much.
Tomomi - She can be slangy I think but the only reason I knew Rina's quirks were Kansai-ben was of the others complaining so I don't really know what Tomo's doing without any guidance.
Mami - Most of you were saying that she's pretty standard but that's not that true. She's not speaking a dialect but she doesn't always speak in perfect standard either. She's just speaking Mami. Of course the bit we all know is how she calls herself "boku" but she also likes to use antiquated terms like "da ga" etc that make her speach pretty eccentric at times.
In terms of accent:
Mami and Haruna are both from Nagoya and I defintely hear a certain similar tone they share (though sometimes Mami and Tomo sound alike but I think that's just a friends influencing each other thing). I find Mami has a bit of a thick accent which perhaps corresponds with her description in one interview as being from a poor part of Nagoya, but this is now becoming speculative. Rina has a distinctive sound to me and since she is the born-and-bred Osaka-jin I guess it's an Osaka accent. None of them really speak with a standard accent if you compare them with news readers and Tokyo-born popular actors they sound very very very different.

The osaka accent is quite noticable on the girls.
I hear much Japanese and the use of osaka slang is noticeable.
Especially Rina and Tomomi
