Hello, I am new here in Scandal-heaven~just want to ask why Scandal does not usually perform Scandal nanka buttobase, which is their highest selling single before Awanai tsumori~I don't think I have seen them performed it like in Girl's Factory or Mezamashi... just wondering~because I really like the song:) They always perform Love Survive, which is one of their lowest selling single, I think they have forgotten about this song completely. What do you think? Thanks! .hi.

I beleive Taiyou Scandalous sold more than Nanka, but anyway it doesn't matter what sells more or what doesn't, they'll play what they want and Love Survive is one of their most known songs, and If I remember right since Love Survive they stopped using school uniforms, so it's probably important for them and the fans. It's not like they perform a lot of old songs, in most festivals they usually do new songs, Doll and Love Survive.

Hmm, you bring up a good point.
For deciding what to put into a setlist, I think a lot of factors come into consideration.
Things like freshness (I wouldn't expect to see BEAUTeen!! live anymore), feel or energy of the songs, and popularity are some typical things bands think about.
As for scandal nanka buttobase vs. Love Survive, I'd say Love Survive suits a live show much better; it's one of SCANDAL's fastest songs, has high energy to pump up the crowd, and that breakdown part in the middle of the song (I think it's called a "bridge") can also be used to address the crowd and such.
Scandal nanka buttobase is an interesting song in the fact that the verses and chorus seem to blend in super well. I think it's a matter of: scandal nanka buttobase probably does well in a setlist but other songs do the same things better and have more to offer.

Welcome
Interesting question but actually you could ask the same for other songs too. It's one of the thing I pointed out in some threads last year during their summer festivals, with so many songs it's just a little bit disappointing to see them play some songs over and over and forget about others. I guess only SCANDAL and its staff know the reasons.
Maybe it's simply because they love those songs more, maybe there are logistics reasons behind it with how it's easier to set up the sound or something. I'm not sure if they are doing many poll with their fans in MANIA, maybe some "old" polls showed them Nanka wasn't a fan favorite despite its good sales. Honestly we will never know I think, it's a whole logic and artistic process they have with the staff when they choose the songs I suppose.
It's true that this example is good, I can't remember Nanka Buttobase in a recent set list at all :/ But again, many other great songs have the same fate, and in the end they cannot play all of their songs =P
Nanka Buttobase is the 4th (or 3rd, depends how you count the singles) best selling single.
1. Awanai : 40.693
2. Runners high (special split single) : 39.563
3. Taiyou Scandalous : 39.033
4. Nanka Buttobase : 35.772
Maybe they will play it in one of the Arena...
PS : On a side note, and I'm not saying Nanka doesn't deserves its sale numbers, maybe it sold so good because it has 4 editions, we know that many fans love to buy multiple limited editions =P It is actually the only single that had 4 editions. Haruka had 4 editions too but 1 had simply another cover with no new content. Just noticed that while checking the single =P

Caless Student.clap. Thanks a lot for your replies! I thought no one's gonna answer me .love.
But yah,,I got your points. It's just that since it performed well in the charts, so its one good factor to consider to be part of the setlist. Pin Heel Surfer isn't performed much as well, I honestly don't like it as well as Overdrive. I hope they make more songs similar to AWanai,Kagen no tsuki and Departure .smile. .I would also love to hear them sing songs from their STANDARD album, I feel like they'll not perform much from there just like in BABY ACTION.
I would say Doll is really a great song during lives, especially that it kinda sound different from the original version, and it just doesn't get old! Well, their other non-single songs are great, too, like Satisfaction.I don't think it won't be performed live as well if it had not been used in a commercial.
I am excited to see the setlist for their Arena TOur! I hope they would try not to use outer space/anime themed concert.

Why, it's a good topic and we are very friendly here
Well, for the STANDARD's songs they played them during the album tour (not on TV) and they are still very new.
I'm sure there is big chance we can hear some songs from it during the arenas (I suppose we get 1 or 2 DVDs and totally hope they sing some STANDARD's songs ^^). It would be a huge surprise for me to not see a lot of STANDARD's songs in the arenas set lists, because it's the latest album and that is kind of the point I think with a new album, get new songs and play them ^^
Pin Heel Surfer didn't sell well and like Nanka I haven't seen it in a set list for a long time and we probably won't see it often anymore anyways, maybe it will pop up in a setlist one day for a show but nothing more.
Not sure what you mean by outer space/anime themed concert.

I'm sure every song is included or excluded for reasons unique to each song. At this point they have a lot of songs in their catalog so it's harder to pick what to include in a set list than what to exclude. Any song that has *any* reason to exclude it is going to be excluded. Who knows, maybe one of the band members just doesn't like playing Scandal Nanka Buttobase.
I listened to it just now to see if there could be any technical reason why they wouldn't play it and I don't hear anything obvious. Some songs I think are actually too hard for them to play live the same way as they do on the album, but this song is pretty straightforward. So it has to be something else.
One thing I've noticed is that they don't seem to play songs live that have choreography if they can't do at least the basic choreography while actually playing. Maybe they're worried it would disappoint fans if they heard a song but couldn't "see" it performed like they expect. Scandal Nanka Buttobase has really complicated choreography that involves their hands and feet, and when they played it at Budokan, they *only* did the choreography and mimed the playing. So it was kind of like watching them perform the music video (which was playing behind them). I think they did that because there's too much going on to do both at once, and there's no easy way I could think of to cut that choreography down to only parts they could do while playing.
That would be my guess, anyway. But it could be something even simpler, like the band just not enjoying playing that song live. And they're long past the point of touring to sell Baby Action CD's, so it's not really necessary for them to play it at this point.

well you have to consider they always have a number of "staple songs" in their typical setlist (including but not limited to - SCANDAL BABY, LOVE SURVIVE, DOLL, Taiyou to Kimi ga Egaku Story, ESY, Shunkan Sentimental etc), which are either the most well known or have some sort of personal meaning to them, which is why they have always picked these few songs. after considering this they probably have to maximise the time left available in order for their fans to enjoy the rest of the concert, and this should be where all the decisions start coming in. No one knows their reasons for excluding any song, but possible reasons could include relevancy to the current times (i.e. age), the kind of mood it generates, or even personal reasons. SNB is pretty old tbh, and like Lexian says I don't feel it has the kind of energy to pump up the excitement of the crowd like LS does.
It's not always about sales numbers behind every decision, and sales numbers is not always an indicator of popularity. LS didn't sell well because it was released just before BABY ACTION, but with the style and kind of energy it generates I think it would always be a fan favourite.
