SCANDAL’s TOMOMI; The connection between music and cars
As we know, TOMOMI (and MAMI) has been going to driving school since the start of this year. Timo has very recently been interviewed and featured on Mitsubishi Electric’s CLUB DIATONE, and as quoted: “Just by solely changing the navigation system, I’m surprised by the amazing sound that comes out. It’s unbelievable." She also says, "Now, I am in midst of going for my driving license with MAMI, who’s on guitar. But if I’m able to get my license safely, I’ll want a car.”
There is then a lot of deep sound-and-car-related talk (which I am not too good at OTL), in which Tomomi does listening trials of various car models’ navigation systems and speakers, such as that of the BMW MINI ONE CROSSOVER. She also discusses the sort of car she’ll like to get, which are either this MINI or the (Volkswagen) beetle, as well as how car speakers bring out the various standardized sounds. She also meets the men who installed the speakers in the BMW and the developer of the DIATONE sound navigation system.
Tomomi also reveals the kind of drive she’ll like to experience if she gets her license, where she’ll like to drive by the sea or mountains while listening to Tavito Nanao-san, eventually end up at the seaside. She looks up to the sort of car drive in which she can drive while listening to her favourite sort of music as she goes to her favourite places.
The interview continues, now with less car talk and more on Tomomi / SCANDAL. When asked on how she comes up with music, her absolute condition is ‘In the middle of the night, alone’. When time itself feels nonexistent, that’s when lyrics are conceived. She also discusses her interest in Fender’s bass guitars, as she like acoustic-sort of sounds. In the past when she attended a live by Paul McCartney, she’d thought it was amazing how the bass and violins came together. She expresses her wish to ‘be one’ with her bass guitar. The question about if SCANDAL ever fight also pops up (but we all know the answer is a no).
Last but not least, Tomomi also talks about SCANDAL’s recording process, in which it is often done all in one go unlike the making of the music. She also touches about how SCANDAL’s starting point were in live houses and that’s where she’ll also hope for them to continue playing at. Timo also shares how her personal music taste is for ‘warm-feeling music’.
She also puts together a personal playlist of 9 songs to play on the navi system (HERE, kindly scroll to bottom). It includes popular tunes by artists such as Okamura Yasuyuki, Suga Shikao, THEE MICHELL GUN ELEPHANT and more
